Astronomy Convocation at The Meadowlands Environmental Center Astronomy Convocation Meadowlands Environmental Center 2 De Korte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst, NJ 07071 Tuesday, February 5, 2019 Grade 5 On February 5, 2019, the fifth grade G&T students attended an Astronomy Convocation at The Meadowlands Environmental Center in Lyndhurst, New Jersey. This convocation entitled "The Sun Through Time" was a multidisciplinary workshop based on the theme of solar astronomy. Our fifth grade students participated in one of four modules investigating humans' understanding of the sun through time with ancient cultures, sundials, telescopes, solar energy and modern solar study. As part of these four modules, our students wrote a song based on the layers of the Sun, made model telescopes, wrote a script for a short play and game show, acted as hosts of the TV show¨Like it, or Leave It¨, designed model deciduous trees reflecting the seasons, created scenery, calculated and painted models of the Sun, designed mosaic sundials, used a slinky to demonstrate wave length and how to measure crests and troughs, and used prisms to view the colors of the spectrum and built a model eco-friendly solar home. In addition, our students were given the opportunity to work with other fifth grade students from West New York. This opportunity enabled students to utilize social skills and be integral parts of a collaborative team. This high energy convocation culminated in a creative showcase where all teams presented their final products.
